Nevaeh Tolson-Eveans from Sun Prairie East High School is our 2024-25 Essay Contest Winner!

This year's essay topic was: "What impact do you believe social media is having on mental health and why is it important to address this issue?" The Gamma Gamma Gamma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi's 2025 winner is Nevaeh Tolson-Eveans of Sun Prairie East High School, an accomplished student with a 3.63 GPA and a strong record of leadership, service, and academic achievement. As President of the Black Student Union during the 2022–2023 school year, Nevaeh increased student engagement, expanded membership, and successfully organized the school’s Black History Month program. She is also an active member of the Multicultural Student Achievement Network (MSAN), promoting cultural awareness and supporting diversity initiatives. In addition to her academic and leadership roles, Nevaeh participated in Sun Prairie United Cheer during the 2022 basketball season. Her commitment to service is evident through her volunteer work with Sunshine Place Emergency Food Pantry, Read Your Heart Out, Reality Rocks career event, and the St. Vincent de Paul Little Drummer Christmas giveaway. She also served as a Student Ambassador for Madison College's STEM program, advocating for STEM opportunities and mentoring 10th-grade students. Nevaeh is certified as a Nursing Assistant by the State of Wisconsin and holds CPR and Freshman Football Manager certifications. Her essay, entitled "Social Media Impact on Mental Health: For Better or For Worse," thoughtfully examined both the positive and negative effects of social media, from increased access to information and knowledge to challenges such as cyberbullying, self-esteem, and the pressures of belonging. She wrote, “Social media trains us to compare our lives instead of appreciating everything that we have.” Already a college student as an Early College Stem Academy scholar at Madison College, this fall Nevaeh will attend Howard University to study nursing, continuing her path of academic excellence, leadership, and care for others.

"As a committee, we were blown away by Nevaeh’s powerful and thought-provoking piece, “Social Media: For Better or For Worse.” With grace and insight well beyond her years, she explored the complex impact of social media—its benefits, its pitfalls, and the responsibility we all share in helping young people navigate it wisely. Her writing deeply resonated with our chapter and scholarship committee, leaving a lasting impression through its clarity, wisdom, and maturity." - Bro. Ebrahim Amara, Scholarship Committee Chair

Job well done, Brothers.
